What is PrEP?
Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) are drugs taken by an HIV negative person, to reduce the risk of getting HIV through unprotected sex.
PrEP HIV prevention study
We are currently running a PrEP research study into HIV prevention. It compares twice-yearly injections with a daily oral pill. For more details, including eligibility and how you can take part, please go to the HIV prevention study page.
How does PrEP work?
The drugs can block the virus from infecting you if it gets inside your body during unprotected sex.
Do I need PrEP?
PrEP is recommended to people who are at high risk of getting HIV. Recent studies have shown that taking PrEP can significantly reduce the risk of becoming HIV positive.
To help you assess your own risk, take this online assessment PrEP Tool – It Starts With Me.
How do I get PrEP?
If you are eligible for PrEP, it is available from NHS sexual health clinics, including Beckenham Beacon sexual health clinic.
Will I have to pay?
PrEP is available free on the NHS from sexual health clinics.
I'm already taking PrEP
That’s great news. If you’ve been getting it from a different clinic or buying it online, the good news is that you can continue your treatment locally at Beckenham Beacon sexual health clinic.
Does PrEP protect against STIs?
No – only reliable use of condoms can do this. Find out if you're eligible for free condoms via one of our schemes in Bromley.
